President's Message

At the end of August, I will step down as President of SMPS Central PA.  As I self-reflect on the past year, it’s become tremendously clear that the spirit of volunteerism is the backbone of this organization.  Without the volunteers who serve on the Board of Directors or as Committee Chairs, I could not have been an effective leader.  I have gained so much respect for so many people who have stepped up this past year, and I’d like to thank everyone who made my job as President so easy.  Wait, did I just say “easy?”  Yes, yes I did.  Don’t get me wrong, in some ways this has been the longest year of my life, but in others it seems like the shortest!  I faced a number of challenges as President of SMPS Central PA, but none that were insurmountable.  Through the support and guidance of my fellow directors and chairs, I successfully navigated the tough times and relished in the good times.  Fortunately, there were a lot more of the latter!

The past year as President was truly a fulfilling experience.  I started my term with a goal of not only making a difference, but to further advance the mission of this wonderful organization within the Central PA region.  We adopted the theme of TRANSFORM, and I believe we were successful in transforming many parts of our chapter.  But true transformation takes time – it requires more than a single year to make lasting change.  So while it’s great to look back and appreciate how far we’ve come, it’s equally important to focus on the future and the work yet to be done.  We still need more volunteers to offer their expertise, passion, talent, and experience to keep moving the chapter forward. Every member of this organization has something valuable to offer, and we welcome your input as we begin planning for the 2018-19 year.  Please plan to join us on July 18 for our annual chapter planning meeting – we need your ideas for continuing our transformation!

I’d like to congratulate the incoming Board of Directors and wish them lots of success in the coming year.  I’d especially like to recognize Cristina Barnes who will be taking over the role of President.  I know the chapter is in good hands with Cristina at the helm!

Thank you again for the opportunity to serve as your President.  I’ll be stepping into the role of Immediate Past President, so you’ll still see me around.  You can’t get rid of me that easily!  :)

Call for Nominations

It’s time for SMPS Central PA's Annual Horizon and Keystone award nominations!

There are outstanding SMPS members who should be recognized for their many accomplishments, and it’s up to you to make that happen!

Have you noticed the SMPS member who seems to be taking the A/E/C industry by storm? You know the one. It’s that person who excels at juggling RFP deadlines, meetings, networking events, and trainings, while still managing to smile. Or, is it that member who has introduced you to key contacts and colleagues, opening the door for valuable project leads? Perhaps it’s that marketer who is your “go-to” person for industry trends and marketing advice? Too often, the words “thank you” don’t seem adequate in applauding these efforts.

SMPS has a way to acknowledge those who go the extra mile. As an active member of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter, you are invited to submit the name of a member who meets the criterion. SMPS is calling for nominations for awards in two categories – The Horizon and Keystone Award.

The Horizon Award is presented to a person new to our industry who “stands out in the room” and whose early success and commitment to the industry shows outstanding potential for business stardom as an A/E/C marketer.

The Keystone Award will honor a more senior professional in our industry whose career accomplishments and service to our chapter are especially noteworthy.

Candidates are to be highly regarded in the industry and active in attendance and contributions to our Chapter. Nomination forms can be found under Contact Us/Nominations and Awards, or here, and have a deadline of August 3, 2018. Winners will be announced at the Chapter Annual Meeting on August 23, 2018.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jacque Foster at or 717-232-0593 .

Member Spotlight

Name: Dave Calnon
Title: Account Manager
Firm: Print-O-Stat
# of years in the A/E/C industry: 2
Role with Central PA SMPS: member, Sponsorship Chair

  1. How long have you been a member of SMPS? About a year now. My first meeting was at Troegs and I thought this was an organization I should belong to.
  2. Why did you become a member?  I’ve been with Print-O-Stat 2 years now and I have always supported the industries I have worked in. I think it’s important to give back and support the organizations I’m involved with.
  3. Do you have a mentor or guide (or have you had one in the past)? Everyone has been welcoming and it’s a great team but Brooke Wenger stands out as bringing me into the fold.
  4. What quality does that person possess that you wish you did? Energy, she makes the Energizer Bunny seem narcoleptic.
  5. What is your favorite SMPS memory? The Reef Ball Build was a special event that I won’t forget for a long time as my car still smells like Old Bay and Crabs.
  6. Of the other regular educational/networking events you attend, which would you recommend to SMPS members? I’m a fan of Stambaugh Ness and the SCAEC Mixers. It’s a nice time to get together in an informal setting but for the explicit purpose of getting to know colleagues in the industry.
  7. What is one thing that everybody knows you for? I can be annoyingly pleasant.
  8. What did you study in college?  Economics and Finance, before I found my calling in sales.
  9. What would you study in college now?  I still love economics for interpreting the crazy world around us. It helps put my customers concerns into a real work perspective and hopefully I can relate better and be an advocate for their needs.
  10. What are your hobbies & interests outside of the office and SMPS? Outdoor Activities, Hiking and Kayaking.
  11. What is the one movie you have to watch if you run across it on your TV? Casablanca I have watched many times. I appreciate Rick’s sacrifice of his own interests for a bigger cause.
  12. Do you have any advice, secrets to success or guiding thoughts?  I try to listen first and understand. It's cliché but I try to adhere to the trope, “Nobody cares what you know until they know that you care.”

SMPS Central PA DVD Library

Attention CPSMers!

All those late nights reading the Marketing Handbook/MARKENDIUM and taking sample exams before work have paid off. You passed the Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM) exam and added those coveted CPSM initials after your name on your business cards and email tagline. Yippee! You are set for three years until you have to renew the certification. Three years to earn 50 continuing education unit (CEU) credits to maintain that CPSM status. Piece of cake, right?

But, it is amazing how fast those three years fly by. Even if you attend many of the SMPS Central PA educational events, you typically only earn one CEU credit per event. So, what is that, maybe 10 CEU credits a year? You could go to an SMPS regional or national conference and earn CEUs. Sure, that helps. But attending the national SMPS Build Business conference only earns you 10-12 CEUs.

We have a solution to your 50 CEU credits dilemma. Earn CEUs by watching the DVDs in our DVD Library. All you have to do is watch one of the DVDs, have a third party (your boss or subordinate) verify that you watched the DVD, and then forward the CEU form that comes with each DVD to SMPS National for credit. Each DVD in our collection earns you 1.5 CEUs. So, make this the summer of CEUs and start earning now! To borrow a DVD, just email Available titles include:
