    Join SMPS Central PA and HISTORIC HARRISBURG ASSOCIATION and explore the architecture, heritage and urban fabric of Pennsylvania's Capital City. 

    Program Highlights:

    • Guided walking tours of Midtown and Downtown Harrisburg conducted by Board Members and Architectural Historians of the Historic Harrisburg Association
    • See the new exhibit “Harrisburg’s Merchant Heritage and the Legacy of Mary Sachs” highlighting the downtown retail landmarks (also featured on the walking tour) and merchants such as Mary Sachs that made Harrisburg a 20th-century shoppers’ destination.
    • A private reception in the Historic Harrisburg Resource Center, 1893 Romanesque Revival landmark built to house the Central Trust Company and successor institutions.  Now as the headquarters of the Historic Harrisburg Association, the Resource Center is undergoing gradual restoration to return it to its original appearance while accommodating contemporary functions.


    Program Schedule:

    2:30 PM:     Registration at the Historic Harrisburg Resource Center, 1230 N. Third Street.  Free parking available in angled parking across the street surrounding the historic Broad Street Market. 

    3:00 PM:     Guided Walking Tour will depart.  Guided sidewalk tour, including Historic Midtown, Riverfront Park, Front Street mansions, landmarks of the City Beautiful, sunset vistas of the Susquehanna River, “Governor’s Row,” historic Market Square and Market Street, 1885 Pennsylvania Railroad station, majestic churches (one hosted the Whig presidential convention of 1840 which nominated “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too!”, the 1970s “Strawberry Square” urban shopping mall proposed by Philip Johnson, and the Pennsylvania Capitol Building, proclaimed by President Theodore Roosevelt “the handsomest building I ever saw!” when he dedicated it in 1906.

    5 – 7 PM:     Private reception in the Historic Harrisburg Resource Center.  Wine, beer, soft drinks; heavy hors d’oeuvres. Brief remarks by SMPS and HHA leadership.  Further opportunity to see above-mentioned exhibit and explore the old bank! (The renowned Midtown Scholar Bookstore next door is open until 9 PM.)

    Cancellation/Refund Policy

    Cancellations made 48-hours prior to the event will be fully refunded.  Due to our commitment with the meeting facility for food and beverage quantities, all other cancellations or no-shows will be invoiced for the full cost of the event.
