    SMPS CPA and AIA Pennsylvania are teaming up again this January for a continuing education and networking event.  Anthony Potter, Esq. of Powell Trachtman Logan Carrie & Lombardo, P.C. will present "Copyright Law in the Real World of the Design Professional" on January 18th at the Appalachian Brewing Company's Abbey Bar in Harrisburg, PA.  This presentation will focus on the topic of intellectual property and copyright law for design professionals.  During this hour long course, members of both organizations will learn the basic principles of copyright law, what constitutes infringement of intellectual property, how AIA Contract Documents can be used as a tool to guard against unauthorized use of documents, how to ensure that clients pay for their design services through the Copyright Act, and much more.

    Learning objectives will include:

    • Review the basic principles of Copyright Law including contract-based controls and transfer of intellectual property interests;
    • Discuss conduct that constitutes infringement of intellectual property rights and how to prevent such violations within your firm and by clients;
    • Explain how the Copyright Act and the intellectual property protections found in AIA Contract Documents can be used as a tool to guard against unauthorized and improper use of documents expanding liability; and
    • Analyze how the Copyright Act may be used to prevent failures by clients to pay for design services.

    Anthony S. Potter, Esq.

    Anthony S. Potter focuses his practice on the representation and counseling of architects, engineers, contractors, design-build entities, and other businesses in matters involving contracting, commercial and construction litigation, administrative law, and professional licensing.  Mr. Potter serves as general counsel to AIA Pennsylvania and is frequently called upon to provide seminars for design professionals on loss prevention, standard form construction contract documents, and construction litigation.  He has represented clients before the Commonwealth Court, Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.
